Overview

This Level 6 Special Purpose Award (20 ECTS credits) will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how to manage effectively in today’s regulated Human Service Sector while supporting staff in a manner that meets requirements set out in employment law.

The programme aims to provide participants with knowledge on the origins and rationale for regulations; how to prepare for and engage positively with inspections as well as an understanding and development of the necessary competencies required to abide by employment law when it comes to managing staff.

 

  • Students must be working in a human service environment for at least 10 hours per week as a team member/manager/PIC/PPIM.
  • This is vital to the applied nature of the programme, so that learners may both learn from their work environment and apply theory to it.
  • It also allows for a mentorship arrangement in the workplace so that learners have a guide in this application of learning.
  • Managing for HIQA Regulation & Inspection (MHRI) – 10 ECTS credits.
    • the origins of regulation in human services
    • current regulation influencing human services
    • role of the frontline manager in regulation and inspection
    • designing a plan to effectively engage with an inspection
    • brief evaluation of own area of responsibility and action plan development based on the findings
  • Essential Employment Law (EEL) – 10 ECTS credits.
    • the sources of Irish law, with a specific focus on legislation and contractual issues related to the area of employment
    • key mechanisms that support workplace relations
    • impact of current employment law on your role as a manager
    • good practice in managing and implementing disciplinary procedures
    • key elements in an effective recruitment and induction policy in human services

To apply you must:

  • be either 23 years of age when you apply, or Have successfully completed a Leaving Certificate/QQI/FET Level 5 Certificate.
  • be currently working in the human services, community or not for profit environment for at least 10 hours a week and need to be able to apply their learning to an appropriate work setting.

International applicants must provide appropriate documentary evidence of proficiency in English (i.e. IELTS 6.0)

  • The course is assessed through a combination of completing two assignments which also consist of associated online activities.
  • Each module is assessed by way of Continuous Assessment and contributes 50% to overall assessment results.
  • It is an applied course so students must be working at least 10 hours per week in an appropriate work environment.
  • A significant proportion of assessment marks are allocated to the student’s application of what they learn in a real-world setting.
